The general accepted definition of “Type Rating” is that in order for a pilot to be pilot in command of an aircraft that weighs more than 12,500 lbs, or a turbo jet aircraft, that person must hold a type rating in that specific aircraft type. This requires training and a check ride from an FAA examiner. That costs money, generally, big money. If you have a military pilot in command designation in a military aircraft that weighs more than 12,500 lbs, and that aircraft has a civilian designation, you can get that added on to your civilian certificate. The entire process consists of filling out the paper work and presenting it to an examiner. That is the problem. Knowing how to fill out the application and getting to an examiner requires some advanced knowledge. There is no check ride involved.
For a minimum fee of $40, plus $40 per additional hour, we will guide you through this rather complicated process. The examiner will probably charge his fee of $50 for the additional filing. Different examiners may charge different fees.
Your first thought after reading about all of these fees is you can do it yourself. It is possible to go through this process on your own. However you will spend a great deal of time and money educating yourself. We do this professionally. We can save you frustration, hassle, time and money in the long run.
